Choosing a commercial battery storage installer safely comes down to checking a small number of credentials and asking a handful of pointed questions before any contract is signed. The single most important credential is current MCS certification covering battery storage (MIS 3012) — without it, your business risks losing access to SEG payments, 0% VAT on the battery when paired with MCS solar, most grant schemes, and insurance-backed protection if the installer later goes out of business. Beyond MCS, check that electrical work is carried out by NICEIC or NAPIT-registered electricians, that the installer holds proper public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and that they’ve actually modelled your half-hourly demand data rather than quoting from a rule of thumb. A good installer will also manage your G99 grid connection, confirm your planning position, and design to current fire safety guidance as standard — if a quote is silent on any of these, that silence is itself a red flag.
Commercial battery storage is a five- or six-figure investment for most businesses, installed once and expected to run reliably for a decade or more. The single biggest factor in whether that investment performs as promised isn’t the battery brand — it’s the competence of the installer who designs, specifies and commissions it. A well-chosen battery from a mediocre installer will underperform and cause headaches; a well-chosen installer will get the sizing, compliance and paperwork right regardless of which reputable battery brand ends up on the wall.

Unlike most commercial purchases, a poorly installed battery system is genuinely difficult to unwind. Getting a second installer to take over a badly designed or badly documented system often costs more than starting from scratch, and warranty claims can be jeopardised by non-compliant installation work. The vetting happens once, at the start — which is exactly why it’s worth doing properly.
Battery hardware from established manufacturers is, broadly, reliable — the failure points in most underperforming commercial systems trace back to design and installation decisions, not the cells themselves. Correct sizing against your actual half-hourly demand, correct electrical integration with your existing supply, correct grid connection paperwork, and correct commissioning and testing are all things the installer controls, and all things that go wrong quietly rather than obviously.
An underperforming battery doesn’t usually announce itself with a dramatic failure. It just quietly delivers a longer payback, a smaller saving, or a warranty claim that gets disputed because the installation didn’t meet the manufacturer’s stated conditions — problems that are much harder to trace back to a root cause months or years later than they would have been to prevent at the outset.
MCS — the Microgeneration Certification Scheme — is the UK’s national quality assurance framework for small-scale renewable energy installations, covering solar PV, battery storage, heat pumps and several other technologies. It certifies two separate things: the products themselves (panels, inverters, batteries meeting defined performance and safety standards) and the installer (confirming the company employs qualified staff, follows proper design and commissioning processes, and operates a quality management system). Battery storage specifically sits under MCS standard MIS 3012.
MCS certification isn’t a legal requirement to install a battery, but in practice it’s the gateway to almost everything that makes the investment worthwhile. Without it, a business typically can’t access Smart Export Guarantee payments, can’t access most current grant schemes, and loses the 0% VAT rate that applies to battery storage when installed alongside a qualifying MCS-certified solar system — a non-MCS installation attracts the full 20% VAT rate instead. Every MCS-certified installer is also required to purchase an MCS-approved financial protection product for each customer, which protects you if the installer is later unable to honour its installation warranty.
The MCS Installer Scheme was redeveloped in 2026 with a stronger emphasis on installation quality and consumer protection. NICEIC was approved to deliver the redeveloped scheme from 23 February 2026, and every new applicant has been assessed under it since 9 March 2026. What hasn’t changed is the requirement for installers to hold the customer-facing financial protection product — so an installer certified before or after the changeover should still be able to produce this alongside their certificate.
Standard MCS certification typically covers systems up to around 50kWp. For larger commercial installations beyond that scope, MCS remains the recognised benchmark for quality and design competence, but the project will also need a separate G99 grid connection application and may fall outside some MCS-specific incentive rules. A genuinely experienced commercial installer will be upfront about where MCS scope ends and where G99 and other processes take over, rather than treating MCS as a box that’s simply ticked and forgotten.
MCS is the headline credential, but a handful of others separate a genuinely competent commercial installer from one that’s simply ticking the minimum box.

A confident, experienced installer will answer these questions readily and specifically — vague or evasive answers to any single one of them are worth treating as a signal, not dismissing as a formality.
Some warning signs are serious enough that they should end a conversation with an installer outright, regardless of how competitive the headline price looks.
The installer can’t produce a verifiable MCS certificate. The quote was generated without a site survey or any review of your actual consumption data. The installer is vague or dismissive when asked about G99, planning, or fire safety compliance. The warranty terms aren’t in writing, or the installer can’t clearly explain the guaranteed state of health at the end of the term. The price is dramatically below every other quote with no clear explanation why.
None of these are minor administrative gaps — each one points to a project that’s likely to be under-designed, poorly documented, or difficult to support later if something goes wrong.
